Going Home After A Heart Attack: What To Expect (PART 3)
ContinuCare Home Health Inc. in San Antonio Texas will cover everything a patient can expect when returning home after a heart attack. We will talk about early recovery, activity, rehabilitation programs and many more in our four-part blog post.
After a heart attack, it’s normal to feel depressed and angry. This will usually go away over time as the patient gets back to his regular activities. The patient and his loved ones can help relieve any emotional blues through:
- Making sure the patient is up and dressed ready daily, avoiding staying in bed all day.
- Getting out and taking a walk regularly to keep the patient’s mind and body healthy.
- Going back to hobbies and social activities the patient enjoys before having the attack
- Sharing thoughts and feelings with the family, friends or a support group
- Getting complete sleep at night. Not getting enough sleep can cause the patient to feel tired and irritable. If the patient is having difficulty sleeping at night, best to limit day naps to a minimum.
- Limiting friend and family visits at first in order for the patient not to feel overly tired. Loved ones can increase the visits depending on how the patient feels.
- Joining a cardiac rehabilitation program. This type of program can provide emotional support through the use of guided activities and educational programs tailored to the patient’s needs.
When it comes to diet, having a heart healthy one is crucial in order to prevent further heart complications. The patient must make sure to include more vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes into his diet. Any fat calories must be chosen wisely with eliminating any dietary cholesterol. Eating a wide variety of good food with the right amount of protein is a good way to go. As much as possible, it is best to rely on complex carbohydrates rather than simple carbohydrates for energy. Cardiac patients must also be careful when it comes to sodium content and they must see to it that they take proper amounts of potassium, magnesium and calcium in their diets.
